Ultrasound (US or Sonography): Safe, Radiation-Free Imaging for Internal Organs
Ultrasound, also known as US or sonography, is a radiation-free imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture detailed images of the body’s internal organs. Ultrasound is ideal for examining organs like the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, and superficial structures such as the breast, thyroid, and scrotum. Special Doppler ultrasound techniques, including Carotid, Venous, and Arterial Doppler, allow doctors to assess blood flow effectively.
Preparing for Your Ultrasound: Guidelines and Tips
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. Depending on the type of scan, you may need to follow specific instructions:
– For some exams, avoid eating or drinking for up to 8 hours before the appointment.
– For others, you may be asked to drink six glasses of water one hour prior to the exam and refrain from urinating so that your bladder is full at the start of the scan.

Ultrasound exams are typically painless, fast, and easy. Most exams are completed within 30 minutes, making ultrasound a quick and convenient option for diagnostic imaging.
